Soffit and Fascia Painting

This project involved a complete repaint of the soffit and fascia areas of a residential home on Marco Polo Street for our client, Levi.
All paint materials were supplied by the client, while our team — Nik and Parsa — handled the full surface preparation and painting process.

We began by carefully cleaning the soffit and fascia boards with damp cloths to remove all dust, dirt, and build-up. Once the surfaces were spotless, we repaired cracks and holes in two stages to ensure a smooth, even base.

The Challenge: Preparing Soffits and Previously Uncoated Fascia

The soffits and fascia boards required thorough cleaning to remove accumulated dust, dirt and surface buildup before painting could begin.

Visible cracks, holes and uneven areas also needed attention. Some fascia timber had not previously been coated, so its preparation and coverage required additional care.

Our team used a staged repair and painting process, including two-stage filling, sanding, masking, gap sealing and inspection between coats.

Our Painting Process

Soffit and Fascia Preparation and Painting Process

The work was completed through a sequence of cleaning, repairs, preparation and painting, with additional inspection after the first coat.

01

Cleaning the Soffits and Fascia Boards

We began by carefully cleaning the soffits and fascia boards with damp cloths.

This removed dust, dirt and accumulated surface buildup, making it easier to identify areas requiring repair.

02

Two-Stage Crack and Hole Repairs

Once the surfaces were clean, we inspected the soffits and fascia boards for visible cracks, holes and other surface imperfections.

The affected areas received repairs in two stages to build up a smoother, more even base before painting.

03

Final Sanding and Surface Protection

After the repairs, the entire painting area was sanded and cleaned again to remove the remaining dust.

We then masked edges, corners and wall junctions to protect adjacent surfaces before applying the first coat of paint.

04

First Coat and No More Gaps

Following preparation, we applied the first coat of paint to the prepared soffit and fascia surfaces.

Visible gaps were then filled using No More Gaps in suitable joints.

Once the gap filler had dried, we rechecked the surfaces for any remaining imperfections.

05

Final Surface Check and Additional Sanding

Following the gap-filling stage, we inspected the prepared areas and completed any additional sanding required.

This helped address remaining visible imperfections before the final finishing stage.

06

Final Painting and Extra Fascia Coat

We completed the final painting stage, creating a consistent finish across the soffit and fascia.

An additional coat was applied to the fascia boards to achieve full coverage, as the timber had originally been uncoated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should soffits and fascia boards be repainted?

The original project information suggests an approximate repainting interval of 5–7 years.

Actual repainting intervals depend on the coating system, previous preparation, sun exposure, moisture, timber condition and ongoing maintenance.

Periodic inspection can help identify peeling paint, open joints or other signs of wear before further deterioration develops.

Can weathered soffits and fascia boards be repaired before painting?

Surface defects such as minor cracks, holes and uneven areas can often be repaired as part of the preparation process, depending on the condition of the underlying material.

On this Marco Polo Street project, visible cracks and holes were repaired in two stages, followed by sanding and cleaning.

Significant timber deterioration or structural damage may require separate repairs or replacement before painting.

Do soffits and fascia boards need an undercoat?

The appropriate preparation and coating system depend on the timber condition, existing finish and paint product.

Bare or previously uncoated timber generally requires suitable preparation and a compatible primer or undercoat according to the manufacturer's specifications.

On this project, the previously uncoated fascia received additional paint coverage as part of the finishing work.

Can NikPaint repair damaged areas before soffit and fascia painting?

Preparation and minor surface repairs can form part of a soffit and fascia painting project.

For the Marco Polo Street property, our team cleaned the surfaces, repaired cracks and holes in two stages, completed sanding and used No More Gaps on suitable joints.
