The Challenge: Preparing a Weathered Exterior for Repainting

The house exterior required extensive preparation before the new paint could be applied. Loose and flaking paint, surface wear and minor damage needed to be addressed.

The scope included both timber and concrete surfaces, as well as windows, trims and adjoining joints. Each area required appropriate cleaning, sanding, repairs and coating preparation.

Our approach included washing, a full drying period, scraping, machine sanding, filling, undercoating and two finishing stages.

Our Painting Process

Exterior Preparation and Painting Process

The following stages formed the 12-working-day project, from the initial wash through to the final coat.

01

Exterior Washing and Drying

We began by thoroughly washing the exterior surfaces to remove dust, dirt and old paint residue.

After washing, we allowed a full day for the surfaces to dry before continuing with the preparation work.

02

Scraping and Machine Sanding

We carefully scraped away loose and flaking paint to prepare a stable base for the new coating system.

An electric sanding machine was then used across the exterior to smooth the affected surfaces.

Once sanding was complete, we removed dust and masked windows and trims in preparation for patching and minor surface repairs.

03

Patching, Undercoating and Further Repairs

After the necessary patchwork, we applied one full coat of undercoat to the prepared surfaces.

Damaged and sanded areas were then treated with suitable filler. The repaired sections received another round of fine sanding to improve the surface before painting.

04

First Coat and Detailed Inspection

The original project report records the first finishing stage as an application of Zolution paint.

After the first coat, we inspected the exterior and window areas carefully, completing touch-ups wherever necessary.

Suitable joints and gaps were also sealed with No More Gaps as part of the detailed finishing preparation.

05

Final Exterior Paint Coat

After the inspection, touch-ups and gap sealing were completed, we applied the second and final finishing coat.

The final application created a consistent, refreshed appearance across the exterior.

06

Finishing Around Windows and Trims

Particular attention was given to window surrounds, trims and adjoining surfaces during preparation and the finishing stages.

Masking, targeted repairs and touch-ups formed part of the work required to achieve neat transitions between painted areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the exterior paint finish last?

The original project information gives an estimated lifespan of 7–10 years, depending on weather exposure and maintenance.

Actual repainting intervals depend on the substrate, surface preparation, coating system, sun exposure, moisture and ongoing maintenance. This estimate is not a guarantee.

Is Resene Lumbersider suitable for both interior and exterior surfaces?

Resene Lumbersider Waterborne Low Sheen is formulated for specified interior and exterior uses.

It can be used on suitable, correctly prepared substrates, including timber, masonry and fibre-cement.

The appropriate primer and finish should be selected according to the substrate and Resene's application guidance.

How should I maintain the painted exterior?

Regular cleaning helps remove dirt, airborne deposits and other surface contamination.

For routine maintenance, use an appropriate mild cleaning solution and follow the paint manufacturer's cleaning instructions.

Avoid aggressive high-pressure washing that could damage the coating. Inspect exposed areas periodically for early signs of wear.

Can Resene Lumbersider handle New Zealand's coastal weather?

Resene Lumbersider is used for suitable exterior applications exposed to New Zealand's weather conditions.

Coastal environments can place additional demands on painted surfaces through salt deposits, moisture and strong sunlight.

Proper preparation, appropriate primers, correct application and regular maintenance remain important regardless of the finishing product.
