Wallpaper Removal and Interior Painting in Remuera
This 2025 interior renovation project in Remuera, Auckland, involved transforming rooms with old, stubborn wallpaper into freshly plastered and painted living spaces.
The work required more than a conventional interior repaint. After carefully removing the existing wallpaper, our team prepared the underlying GIB surfaces, applied a full skim coat of plaster and completed extensive sanding.
The project also included masking, a full undercoat, detailed surface inspections, targeted filling and interior painting of ceilings, walls, frames and windows.
This project brings together our interior house painting services and GIB stopping and wall repair services in Auckland.
The Challenge: Removing Old Wallpaper Without Damaging the GIB
The existing wallpaper was difficult to remove, and the underlying GIB needed careful handling.
Wallpaper removal can leave old adhesive, uneven areas and surface imperfections. Stripping it without appropriate care can also damage the underlying plasterboard.
For this Remuera project, we carefully removed the old wallpaper and cleaned the surfaces before beginning the plastering work.
The objective was to create a consistent, smooth base for the new painted finish rather than simply covering the old surface defects.
From Wallpaper Removal to a Smooth Painted Finish
The project followed five preparation and painting stages. Each stage was important to the appearance of the final finish.
Careful Wallpaper Removal
We carefully stripped the existing wallpaper to expose the underlying GIB surfaces.
Particular care was taken during removal to minimise unnecessary damage to the walls.
Once the wallpaper was removed, the surfaces were cleaned in preparation for plastering.
Full Skim Coating and Extensive Sanding
The walls received a full skim coat of plaster to cover existing imperfections and create a more uniform surface.
Following the plastering stage, extensive sanding was completed to prepare the new plaster for undercoating.
Dust Removal, Masking and Priming
After sanding, we cleaned the prepared surfaces to remove dust.
Floors, fixtures and other relevant areas were masked and protected before painting.
We then applied a full coat of high-adhesion undercoat to the new plaster.
This helped seal the prepared surface and provide a suitable base for the finishing coats.
The Check and Fill Stage
Once the undercoat had dried, we inspected the walls carefully.
Any remaining minor cracks, pinholes and visible surface imperfections were filled.
The repaired areas were then spot-sanded before the final paint coats.
Ceilings First, Frames Next, Walls Last
Following the preparation, priming and Check and Fill stages, the interior was painted in a planned order.
A Fresh White Finish
We began with the ceilings, creating a fresh, crisp white finish.
Enamel Finish for Trim
Frames and windows were painted with a durable enamel finish suitable for the prepared trim.
Cutting In and Rolling
The walls were painted last. We cut in around the edges and rolled the final wall colour to achieve a consistent finish.
Why the Check and Fill Stage Matters
Even after full plastering and sanding, the undercoat can reveal small cracks, pinholes or other imperfections that were less visible on the bare plaster.
For this project, our team inspected the walls after priming, filled the remaining minor defects and spot-sanded the repaired areas.
This additional preparation helped create a more consistent surface before the finishing coats were applied.
From Dated Wallpaper to Freshly Painted Walls
The completed project transformed the interior of this Remuera home, replacing the old wallpaper with smooth, freshly painted walls.
The work also refreshed the ceilings, frames and windows as part of the wider interior renovation.
The before-and-after images show the difference achieved through wallpaper removal, full skim coating, detailed preparation and interior painting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to plaster the wall after removing wallpaper?
Wallpaper and adhesive removal can leave GIB surfaces uneven or damaged. Whether full plastering is needed depends on the condition of the exposed surface and the finish required.
In this Remuera project, the walls received a full skim coat after wallpaper removal, followed by extensive sanding, undercoating and detailed inspection.
Smaller imperfections on other projects may be suitable for targeted repairs rather than full skim coating.
How much dust and disruption does plastering create?
Plastering and sanding can produce considerable fine dust, especially when preparing multiple walls for painting.
For this project, floors and fixtures were masked and protected. After sanding, the prepared areas were cleaned before undercoating.
Appropriate protection, dust management and clean-up can help reduce disruption during an interior renovation.
How long does a wallpaper removal and painting project take?
Wallpaper removal and repainting generally involve more preparation than a standard interior repaint.
The original project information gives a typical estimate of one to two weeks for a similar Remuera project, depending on the size and condition of the area.
The actual schedule depends on the wallpaper removal, plastering requirements and drying times for the plaster and coating system.
Can you paint over wallpaper instead of removing it?
Painting over some existing wallpaper may be possible, but the condition and adhesion of the wallpaper need to be assessed.
Loose seams, trapped moisture, bubbling and existing surface imperfections can affect the final result.
For this Remuera renovation, we removed the old wallpaper, completed full skim coating and prepared the walls for a painted finish.
